Background and Purpose:
In recent years, flu viruses that at first only infected birds have begun to infect humans. One of these strains, called avian influenza or "bird flu," has caused severe illness and death in several hundred people since late 2003. Scientists are worried that the "bird flu" virus could cause a pandemic, or worldwide spread of infection.
Planning is very important if we are to control the spread of this virus. Since vaccines work well in preventing the "seasonal flu," it is hoped that an effective vaccine against "bird flu" viruses will help to control a future pandemic, if one were to occur.
- To participate, you must be 18-49 years of age.
- You cannot get avian flu from the vaccine.
- There are 8 planned visits and 4 planned phone calls over about 13 months.
- You will be paid $75 each completed clinic visit and $10 for each completed phone visit.
