Basic Biomedical Sciences | Doctor of Philosophy Degree
Four (4) departments are members of the Graduate Programs in Biomedical Sciences:
- The Edward A Doisy Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
- The Department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology
- The Department of Pathology
- The Department of Pharmacological & Physiological Science
Each year, highly qualified candidates with bachelors' degrees are accepted into this multidisciplinary Ph.D. program.
In the School of Medicine, we also offer a fifth Ph.D. program through the Center for Anatomical Sciences. Students can receive a Master of Science, Master of Science (Research), Ph.D. or Certificate in Anatomical Studies.

Basic Biomedical Sciences Application Review Process: Rolling admission for candidates throughout the year for a Fall Term start.
Rankings/Honors: For Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, their program is ranked in the 70th-80th percentile of stipends nationally; NIH ranking in regards to funding; Among the top 50 ranked in regards to federal grant.
Credit Hours/Coursework: All students interested in the Ph.D. program must enroll through the Core Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. This one-year core program provides the student with a strong basic foundation in biomedical sciences and allows the student the opportunity to rotate through various laboratories in the Health Sciences Center before choosing a specific field of study. After the first year, the student chooses a mentor and a department for further work towards their Ph.D. degree. | Basic Courses
Program Description: To assist students in deciding which of the diverse areas of biomedical research is right for them, our program provides students with the opportunity to explore research in as many as four different disciplines during their first year of graduate training. This includes interdisciplinary lecture courses, small group discussions, and participation in a colloquium series. Curriculum & Program Details: The first year courses focus on the basic biochemical, molecular, cellular and organismal aspects of the biomedical sciences. Scholarships & Financial Aid: Financial aid is available and all first- and second-year students receive a nationally competitive, student stipend as well as tuition waivers. Health insurance is also provided by the Core Program. Stipends, health benefits and tuition costs are the responsibility of the student's advisor or doctoral program during the final years of their graduate study, and are most commonly provided by research grants or contracts. | Student Financial Services at SLU
Program Highlights: In 1998, the five Ph.D. granting programs in the biomedical sciences at the St. Louis University School of Medicine established a First-Year Core Curriculum for all entering doctoral students. All students apply to the Core Program and, upon acceptance, begin a year of multidisciplinary coursework and four formal laboratory rotations that lead to the selection of a graduate advisor and entry into one of the four, distinct Ph.D. programs. | Students from 1998-2008
