Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
We are pleased to announce that the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is now working with other departments on campus to offer an undergraduate and graduate certificate program in Geographic Information Science. While many of the courses in the GIS Certificate are offered as 'slash' courses (meaning that undergraduates and graduates will be in the same class) this is a new opportunity for students from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology to obtain marketable skills that are in an exciting field.
"Professionals in remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) are in ever increasing demand in a variety of disciplines. The graduate certificate program in Advanced Remote Sensing and GIS in the Center for Environmental Sciences is developed to fill a growing demand for GIS skills in today's job market. This program is intended to offer a mix of GIS theory and practical training for individuals who have completed an undergraduate education in a wide range of disciplines, and gained a certain level of GIS experience, and wish to upgrade their GIS skills."
Whether you are interested in working in government (local, state or federal), academia or private industry, there is a growing demand for individuals with GIS skills and knowledge. The skills you will acquire with a GIS certificate have immediate applicability in a range of industries and research.
You can find more information about the program at the following address: http://www.ces.slu.edu/index.php
We particularly encourage sophomores and freshman to consider applying for the program, due to the sequence of courses that need to be completed to earn the certificate. If you are interested in the ways that you might be able to use GIS in a future career, please contact Dr. Sandoval at email@example.com.
