What is 'good academic standing' in Major Exploration?
Students whose cumulative SLU grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0 will be placed on probation. Students are given two consecutive semesters to improve scholastically and to demonstrate evidence to proceed toward a degree. A student on academic probation may not register for more than 15 semester hours and may not declare a major.
Major Exploration students who are placed on probation will particpate in the Road to Success academic retention and success program. Each Major Exploration student will be required to complete a self-assessment and meet with Lauren Bolland, Program Director, Major Exploration Academic Advising, within the first two weeks of the upcoming semester. Failure to complete this meeting will result in a hold being placed on the student's account.
The Dean of each degree-granting unit of the University has the authority and responsibility to dismiss a student from the School or College and the University for academic reasons. The conditions under which a student is dismissed are:
- Inability to eliminate probationary status within the two semesters subsequent to the assignment of probation, or
- A total grade point deficit of more than 15 points.
A student notified of dismissal for these reasons may petition for reinstatement. Students must complete the Petition for Reinstatement form, a self-assessment, and calculate the GPA needed to earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Completing this process does not guarantee that a petition will be approved.
Major Exploration students who are approved to return to SLU are admitted on special probation and will participate in the Road to Success academic retention and success program. They must complete a required meeting with Lauren Bolland, Program Director, Major Exploration Academic Advising, within the first two weeks of the upcoming semester. Failure to complete this meeting will nulify the student's reinstatement and the student will be dismissed. In order to remain on special probation, students must earn a minimum of a 2.5 semester GPA and show marked improvement. A student on special academic probation may not register for more than 12 semester hours and may not declare a major.
Students dismissed from Special Probation are not eligible to petition for reinstatement. Students who are dismissed are eligible to reapply to SLU after improving their GPA elsewhere. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with any questions.
