Bachelor of Science in Nursing
The faculty of the School of Nursing believes that academic advising and professional mentoring are integral components of the educational experience. All students in the nursing major are assigned to a School of Nursing advisor in the second semester of the freshman year or on transfer to the program. Students may request reassignment to an alternate advisor at any time. Requests will be submitted to the Baccalaureate and Master's Programs, Associate Chair.
Faculty are available to meet with students throughout the semester to provide academic information, interpret policies, assist in curriculum planning, facilitate academic and career decision making, and refer students to University resources and services. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor at least once each semester to review their academic progress and program plan, and discuss issues related to their professional development.
Prior to the pre-registration period, students must schedule an appointment with their advisor to review their academic progress and program plan. Following this appointment, the advisor will release the student to self-register on-line through WEBSTAR. Detailed directions for on-line registration are available from Student Service Associate (Office 210, School of Nursing) or the Office of the Registrar. Students encountering difficulty with on-line registration should contact the Associate Chairperson in the School of Nursing or a staff member in the Office of the Registrar. REGISTRATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE TO INSURE THAT ALL STUDENTS ARE PLACED IN COURSES THEY NEED AND COURSES AND CLINICAL GROUPS ARE BALANCED ACCORDING TO FACULTY AVAILABILITY AND CLINICAL AGENCY REQUIREMENTS.
Failure to Register
Students who fail to register for courses for two consecutive semesters will be required to reapply to the School of Nursing in order to reactivate their records. There will be no fee for their readmission application. Such students will be required to meet the curriculum requirements in force at the time of readmission.
Late Registration for Nursing Courses
Students are expected to be present for the first scheduled class in nursing courses in order to receive full benefit of the course orientation. Students are not allowed to report late for these courses without the prior permission of the Chairperson of the Baccalaureate Program and the course coordinator.
Students may be administratively withdrawn from courses with clinical components if, in the opinion of the course coordinator and the Chairperson of the Baccalaureate Program, they have insufficient information to progress in the course without considerable individual orientation.
Adding a Course
Students may add a course through WEBSTAR anytime during pre-registration through the first two weeks of the semester. When adding a general education course after the first class has met, students should seek approval from the course instructor.
Dropping a Course
Students may drop a course only during the times designated by the University. Students may complete the drop process through WEBSTAR at any time during the preregistration through the first two weeks of the semester. After the second week in the semester until the last day to drop the course, students must obtain a Change of Registration Form from their academic advisor, receive appropriate signatures, and take the completed form to the Office of the Registrar. If a course is dropped without following the proper procedure, a course grade of AF will be assigned. A grade of AF is calculated into the grade point average as an F.
Courses taken on a Pass-Fail Basis
Courses taken with a Pass/Fail grading option cannot be used to fulfill curriculum and upper division requirements. Courses taken on a pass/fail option are not calculated into the grade point average.
Courses taken for Audit
Courses taken for Audit cannot be used to fulfill curriculum requirements and are not calculated into the grade point average. Students intending to take a course for Audit should meet with the course coordinator to seek approval and clarify the expectations for participation in the course
Students may request a temporary grade of INCOMPLETE (I) for coursework incomplete at the last class or clinical session due to extraordinary circumstances. Students must request the mark of Incomplete. It may not be requested to avoid an unsatisfactory grade. University policy stipulates that the student and the instructor agree in writing to the conditions for clearing the Incomplete. If the Incomplete was assigned to a prerequisite course, it must be cleared by the end of the first week of the course for which it is required. A mark of Incomplete must be cleared within one year after the course was taken. University policy requires that the marks of Incomplete convert to an F after one year.
Permission to take Courses at Other Colleges or Universities
Under special circumstances, students may be permitted to fulfill some course requirements at another college or university while attending Saint Louis University. Students must complete an authorization form with their advisor and submit the form with a photocopied catalog course description to the Associate Chairperson, Baccalaureate and Master's Programs. The student will receive a copy of the form after action is taken and should not register for the course before receiving approval.
A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required for any course to be accepted for transfer. The transferred course is not calculated into the Saint Louis University grade point average. No more than 64 semester hours from a community college can be applied toward the baccalaureate degree. To meet the University residency requirement, the last 30 hours of coursework must be completed at Saint Louis University.
Transcripts of the course(s) must be requested immediately after completion. This should be an official transcript sent from the Registrar directly to the Associate Chairperson, Baccalaureate and Master's Programs. Transcripts issued to the student will not be accepted. Failure to provide the transcript in a timely manner may prevent progression in the nursing sequence or delay graduation.
