Belonging

I rise today
In the name of Silence
Womb of the Word,
In the name of Stillness
Home of Belonging,
In the name of Solitude
Of the Soul and the Earth.

I rise today
Blessed by all things,
Wings of breath,
Delight of eyes,
Wonder of whisper,
Intimacy of touch,
Eternity of soul,
Urgency of thought,
Miracle of health,
Embrace of God.

May I live this day
Compassionate of heart,
Gentle in word,
Gracious in awareness, Courageous in love.

Morning Prayer

Dear God,
I give this day to You.
May my mind stay centered on the things of spirit.
May I not be tempted to stray from love.
As I begin this day, I open to receive You.
Please enter where you already abide.
May my mind and heart be pure and true,
and may I not deviate from the things of goodness.
May I see the love and innocence in all
mankind, behind the masks we all wear and
the illusions of this worldly plane.
I surrender to You my doings this day.
I ask only that they serve You and the healing of
the world.
May I bring Your love and goodness with me, to
give unto others wherever I go.
Make me the person You would have me be.
Direct my footsteps, and show me what You
would have me do.
Make the world a safer, more beautiful place.
Bless all Your creatures.
Heal us all, and use me, dear Lord, that I might
know the joy of being used by You.
Amen.

Today

Today, I will dwell neither on yesterday’s events nor tomorrow’s maybes, but rather the still, perfect moment that is the present.

Today, I will take each moment one at a time. I will sit still and look around me. I will accept every situation I find myself in.

Today, I will appreciate the richness of every season. I will celebrate the spirit of every circumstance, mood, and archetype.

Today, I will cultivate a spirit of gratitude by recognizing the countless blessings in my life. I will offer up continual thanks.

Today, I will seek the beauty in every person I meet and dwell on the good in them. I will build them up and do everything I can to make their day a little better.

Today, I will look each person I talk to in the eye. I will listen to him or her with all of my attention and energy.

Today, I will be kind to myself. I will be gentle yet disciplined, and I will be ready to laugh at myself and my situation at all times.

Today is God’s day. I am alive for it, and I have a purpose.

Prayer Before a Meeting to Discuss the Budget

Generous God,
You provide for the lilies of the field
And the birds of the air.
And you promise to take care of us,
Even when our faith is small.
Bless us as we examine the use of your gifts
And seek to use them fairly, honestly, prudently
To better our University
And meet the needs of our students, faculty, staff and administrators.
During this time of deliberation
As we estimate our needs
And allocate our resources,
May we remember that we are doing your work, not our own.
May we see this meeting time as a way of serving you.
May all that we do and are
Give you praise
And be for your honor and glory.
Amen.

A University Prayer

Gracious God, Father and Mother of us all,
Bless all the dreams and goals of Saint Louis University.
Shower your grace on our efforts to reach those goals.
Motivate all students to seek wisdom:
through conversing, writing, and criticizing;
through exploration and imagination.
Inspire our faculty with effective ways
to touch the minds of the young
with insight into the beauty of your universe.
Help our faculty, administrators and staff
to foster learning, research and faith.

Watch over our alumni and friends;
encourage them to support Saint Louis University generously.
Give success to our teams
and to our scholastic competitions;
grant us all good humor and good health.

In our city and in our country,
help all people to live in safety
and to find productive work
so that they can care well for their families.

Most of all, help each of us
to grow in love and understanding with one another
and with Jesus Christ who is the way to you,our Creator. Amen.

I have used this prayer at the beginning of the school year with students in the Student Government Association, and it has been received quite favorably.

The following prayer is by John Piderit, S.J., an ex-president of Loyola University-Chicago. It is taken from the Loyola University  For You, O God, page 22. It was published in 1995 by Loyola University. The prayer has been adapted to Saint Louis University.
