Frequently Asked Admission Questions
What tests are required as part of the application?
Tests are required for all of the graduate programs at the School of Public Health except the Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA), Master of Health Administration (MHA) and Master of Science (MS in Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness).
GRE or GMAT scores are preferred, but we accept any of the following score reports:
• GRE- Graduate Record Examination
• GMAT- Graduate Management Admission Test
• DAT- Dental Admission Test
• MCAT- Medical College Admission Test
• LSAT- Law School Admission Test (only for dual law degree applications or from law school graduates)

International applicants are also required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores unless they earned a degree from an English-speaking college or university.
Is the new Personal Potential Index (PPI) test required by any of the programs?
No. It is, however, highly recommended for MHA applicants seeking to strengthen their applications. For more details on the PPI test and how it can help you visit www.ets.org
Can any of the tests ever be waived?
Score results are important evaluation tools for both the admissions and financial aid award processes. The only exemptions are for medical doctors and PhDs trained in U.S. universities. Foreign trained MDs are not exempted from submitting test scores unless they are currently enrolled in or have been admitted to a U.S. residency program passage of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) does not exempt students from the tests).
What are the basic Grade Point Average (GPA) and test score requirements for admission?
All applications are considered on an individual basis with a very balanced approach, taking into consideration a broad range of factors.
Ideally, applicants should have a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) to be competitive for most of the programs, preferably a 3.20 or better. Test scores are preferred to be in the 40th percentiles or higher for most programs, however there are no minimum cutoffs in most of the programs. Who should write recommendation letters?
If you are a recent graduate, two out the three required recommendation letters should be academic ones (i.e., from professors). If you have been out of school for awhile you are encouraged to submit at least one academic recommendation if possible, especially for the MHA program. In addition to writing about your academic abilities and work skills, your recommendors should be encouraged to explain why they think you are strong candidate for the public health major and career you've chosen.
How can I schedule a visit to SLU?
For the best way to experience the exceptional learning community at SLU, we encourage you to attend one of the open houses. They are always on Friday afternoons from 1:00- 5:00 p.m. and provide opportunities to hear from and meet the school's leaders, faculty staff and current students. What kind of financial aid is available?
All students who apply for admission by the priority deadlines are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships and graduate research assistantships. Click here to find out more about the finacial aid we offer.
Where do I send my application documents?
To avoid delays in processing your application, please do not send any application documents directly to the School of Public Health. If you are applying via one of the centralized applications services (e.g., SOPHAS or HAMPCAS), send all required documents through those services and as described in their instructions. If you are applying directly to SLU, go to the graduate admission homepage to apply or send your documents to:

How can I check my application status?
Each of the three optional application services (SOPHAS, HAMPCAS and graduate.slu.edu) allows you to self-monitor your application status using the username and PIN you create when you apply. Please allow at least one week or so for submitted documents to be uploaded and reflected on your application. The SLU Graduate Admissions Office will notify you as soon as your application is complete. Shortly thereafter you will be contacted by the School of Public Health.
What happens after I submit my application?
After SLU receives your application and uploads all the required pieces into the university database you will be contacted by our Director of Admissions, Bernie Backer, as soon as possible, usually with a few days to a week of receipt.
What else does an international applicant need to know before applying?
Although transcript evaluations such as World Education Services (WES) are not required, they are highly recommended and beneficial to your prospects for admission.
After you are admitted, you will be required by the SLU Graduate Admissions Office to submit a Declaration of Finances to demonstrate that you have the financial resources necessary to fund the entire cost of your SLU education and living expenses. I-20s will not be issued by the Office of International Student Services until your Declaration of Finances is received by SLU's Graduate Admissions Office.
