Masters in Social Work & Masters of Arts in Deaconess StudiesSt. Louis University and Concordia Seminary are working together to offer a dual degree program in a Masters of Social Work and a Masters of Arts in Deaconess Studies in order to foster an ongoing collaboration between the church's ministry and service to the community, especially through the ministries and service organizations recognized by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The program provides the framework, skills and resources for church workers to engage in social work practice in service to the church and community. Internships will normally be fulfilled in connection with a Lutheran Social Service Agency.
Through a dual track of course work, integrative seminars, fieldwork, and internship the MSW/M.A. in Deaconess Studies program is designed to:
- Prepare students for diaconal ministry and professional social work by providing a solid foundation in social work, theology, and spiritual care.
- Enable students to recognize the spiritual as well as the economic, legal and psychological roots of contemporary social problems.
- Inspire students to serve individuals and communities and develop social action strategies to enhance the common good and the life of the church.
The deaconess ministry has always been dedicated to serving the church in its works of charity, compassion, and human care. Deaconesses have been called by congregations and into foreign missions, employed by hospitals, nursing homes, and social ministry institutions. Expanding the deaconess skills, experience, and qualifications through the field of social work brings an exciting new set of opportunities for servants of the church to work toward bringing justice, caring for the poor, and ministering to hurting communities.
