One surprising difference between the United States and other countries educational system is in how we award scholarships. Many other countries award scholarships on an annual basis, meaning that students can apply for scholarships in all four years. Here in the United States we award scholarships upon admission to the university and have fewer opportunities for University merit and need based aid after students arrive on campus. Please take advantage of these opportunities to lower your personal and family financial burdens.
Billiken, Ignatian, University, Deans' and Vice Presidents' Scholarships
These four-year merit-based scholarships, ranging from $3,000 to $16,000 per year, are available to incoming freshmen. These scholarships do not require a separate scholarship application; the Application for Freshman Admission automatically qualifies applicants for consideration.
For priority consideration for these merit-based scholarships, applicants should apply for admission by Dec. 1. After the priority deadline, scholarships will be awarded as funds are available.
Jesuit High School Award
All applicants who graduate from a Jesuit high school will automatically receive Saint Louis University's Jesuit High School Award, valued at $3,000 per year. Receipt of the Jesuit High School Award recognizes a student's continued commitment to receiving an education in the Jesuit tradition.
As with the merit-based scholarships listed above, students should submit a completed application by Dec. 1 to guarantee consideration. If a Jesuit high school student also receives one of the university's merit-based scholarships, The Jesuit high school award can be combined with that scholarship up to -- but not exceeding -- the cost of full tuition.
Presidential and Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships
SLU also offers two merit-based scholarships that require separate applications: the Presidential Scholarship and the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. The separate applications for these scholarships are available online beginning July 1 of each year. The application deadline for the Presidential Scholarship is Dec. 1; the deadline for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is Jan. 15.
In addition to Saint Louis University Scholarships, many students receive scholarships from outside sources. Though extra work is required, the reward can be significant. It is recommended that students search for these scholarships throughout their entire academic career. Free websites exist to assist you in your search. You may want to consider opening a separate e-mail account to manage the responses. Finally, you may want to write a simple, generic letter indicating why you deserve the scholarship. Then as you continue to apply, you can simply edit your letter to target a particular scholarship.
Check out SLU's Private Scholarship Database for scholarships our students are receiving from private sources.
It is the student's responsibility to notify the office of student financial services of all outside awards (scholarships, loans, etc). If you receive a scholarship check made out to yourself, please bring it to our office in DuBourg Hall, Room 121, for proper posting to your student account. Your Banner ID should always be included on any check that is sent to the University. Please send all private scholarship checks to the address below:
