Careers in Hospitality Management
Give yourself more options, and opportunities for growth.
The St. Louis hospitality industry includes restaurants, hotels, clubs, institutions, sports venues and casinos. Together, these businesses employ more than 250,000 people or almost 10 percent of the workforce in Missouri alone. A minor or certificate in hospitality management allows you to grow or specialize in the industry, preparing you for leadership positions such as:
- restaurant owner/manager
- special events coordinator
- club manager
- food and beverage director
- hotel/motel supervisor
- general manager
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in hospitality management are expected to grow 12 percent through the year 2016. Over the last decade, thousands of hotels opened, and that trend is predicted to continue. With hotel growth across the country, tourism will increase along with a great amount of restaurants.
The average salary of those in hospitality careers was around $43, 000 per year, with the highest-level workers earning upwards of $80, 000 per year. Many hotels and restaurants also offer bonus structures for performance.
This business is growing, and hotels and restaurants will need people trained in hospitality management. Be a part of this growing and exciting career field with a minor or certificate in Hospitality Management from SLU's School for Professional Studies.

"Reopening Vito's in a new larger facility and improved location required me to put together and present a business plan to banks and other organizations in a professional and effective manner. This program gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to make it happen."
- Vito Lafata III, Owner/Manager, Vito's Restaurant
"SLU's program gave me a better understanding of the different individuals that make up the event planning team, such as the caterer and decorator. Learning what they do, what they need and the concerns that they may have has allowed me to produce more successful events."
- LaTonja Thomas-Evans, Special Events Coordinator, St. Louis Business Journal
