Overview: The Investigative and Medical Sciences (IMS) program integrates basic science principles into a medically relevant curriculum to meet the goals of students considering career paths related to medicine, research, and forensic science.
Curriculum: The IMS program is unique in its ability to provide students with:
A strong basic science core and medically relevant courses within the undergraduate curriculum
Flexibility to choose value-added courses focusing on the students' ultimate goals after graduation
Student laboratories with low student to faculty ratio
A solid premed preparatory curriculum
Opportunities to attend professional conferences
Opportunities to perform and present research projects at the culmination of their undergraduate experience
Faculty: The Department of Clinical Laboratory Science administers the IMS program. The department faculty serve as the academic advisors for the IMS students and teach the medically related courses in the IMS curriculum. The faculty are certified laboratory scientists with nationally recognized accomplishments within their profession. They are student centered and dedicated to excellence in teaching.
Internships: Students have the opportunity to complete a research and/or synthesis project during the senior year. The project may be of the student's own design or designed in collaboration with a research affiliate or university faculty. Projects culminate in a paper that is of the caliber that could be published in a professional journal or presented at a professional conference.
Careers: The IMS degree is designed as a preparatory degree for graduate, medical and professional schools. The curriculum also provides the student with the basic science foundation, medical-related knowledge, and applied laboratory skills to practice in research, forensic, and biotechnology labs. The graduate may also compete favorably for positions in medical research and/or pharmaceutical sales.
