University Writing Services: Serving SLU Writers on Campus
We offer free, in-person, one-on-one consultations for any SLU student. You can work on any piece of writing, oral presentation or multimedia project. You can bring in your writing at any point in the composition process. Every good writer needs a good reader and we acts as readers and writing guides.
The easiest way to make an appointment is through SLU Appointments, which can be found in the Tools tab of your mySLU. You may also call the Student Success Center at 314-977-3484. We accept walk-ins when consultants are available; however, an appointment is highly recommended. You will want to bring a printed copy of your work if you have start writing. We have computers at most locations, but we cannot guarantee electronic access to your document.
Consultations begin on the hour and typically last about 45 minutes. Visit the hours and locations page to find the most convenient location for you. Appointments will begin with your needs. If you are working on an assignment it is a good idea to bring the assignment sheet so you and the consultant can lay out a plan that follows the necessary guidelines. If you are working on your own writing, or an assignment sheet has not been provided, then you might bring a short list of goals for the consultation. Your goals will guide the consultation and the consultant will act as an audience member. They will ask you clarifying questions and help you work through answers.
When you are at the beginning of the writing process we usually focus on argument, organization and structure, but even in these sessions we get to down to the business of reconstructing sentences. While we are not an editing service that fixes your paper for your, we love working with grammar. We are here to help you become a better writer. Tell us what you think you need to achieve your writing goals and we will do our best to meet those needs.
Get help with ANY writing, multimedia, or oral presentation project
Consultants will help you develop strategies to improve your writing, but we define writing broadly. Most of us write-out, take notes or at least an outline for an oral presentation. We can help you with that outline and also provide an audience for your presentation. If you have a powerpoint and you want to run through the presentation and get suggestions on keeping your audience's attention we would love to help.
In th end, you will determine how to use the consultant's advice and make all decisions regarding the revision of the writing. Our consultants train very hard and are very good writers, but this is your work and we respect your decisions.
Because our focus is on the writing, communication, and articulation of ideas, we are able to work with writers in every subject area, from engineering to English, from business to biology.
Visit us at any point in the process
At University Writing Services we help you work with whatever you are writing at the moment. You, as the writer, can decide at what point(s) in your writing process you want to seek out an audience. Experience writers find audiences for their work at all stages. We are here to be your audience. We can help you start with a blank sheet of paper or just an assignment sheet. We can help you create an outline or develop a thesis. If your primary concern is just one particular sentence we can help. We can even help you work through multiple drafts of the same assignment if you plan ahead and make multiple appointments over the course of a project.
In fact, we recommend coming several times a semester. We find that students benefit from dividing writing into small steps. Making appointments with us is a good way to plan out your writing process. If you find that our scheduling software does not allow you to make an appointment far enough in advance then please contact Alex Wulff, the Director of University Writing Services, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
