How secure are the residence halls?
There are a number of safety measures in place for each of our apartments and residence halls in order to provide a safe living environment for all students. The front doors of all residence halls are guarded by a card access system and staffed 24 hours a day. Visitors must check in at the front desk and be escorted at all times. Security cameras are also present in the front desk area of the residence halls and are monitored by desk staff. The Village Apartments as well as Grand Forest Apartments do not have front desks and thus in those facilities, students are responsible for the safe locking of their apartment doors at all times. Sprinklers and smoke detectors are present in all apartments and residence halls.
When does my student have to move out after final exams?
Students are expected to move within 24 hours of their last final exam. Students who are unable to move out at that time should contact their Residence Hall Coordinator to request an extension. For more information on moving out, please visit Housing & Residence Life.
Does my student need to remove anything from their room during breaks?
Students do not generally have to remove items from their rooms during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks. We do recommend that students take valuable home with them over break periods. Though the halls are locked during the breaks, staff members are not available to monitor the buildings and do not guarantee the security of the rooms.
What is the University's visitation policy for the residence halls?
Different residence halls have different policies regarding visitation but no facility has unlimited visitation times.
Regardless of which policy is in place, all guests must sign or swipe in and be escorted at all times. For more information on this and other residence life policies visit Housing & Residence Life.
How should I send mail to my student living in a residence hall?
Student mail is not delivered to individual residence hall facilities. Any current student can be assigned a mailbox or MSC box by requesting one at the mailroom office, located on the first floor, rear of the Busch Student Center. When addressing mail to your student, use the following format:

If a student receives a package, they will be notified via a package slip in their mailbox and will pick up the item from the mailroom. For more information visit Student Mail Services.
What should my student do if he/she wants a room reassignment or doesn't get along with his/her roommate?
There will be a room change right at the end of the second week of school during which students may apply to move to another space on campus. Student need to apply for reassignment via the Housing & Residence Life website. Please note the following when completing a room reassignment request:
If a student is in an overflow space they will be given the first opportunity to move.
During SLU 101, students can put in a request for a change of room or roommate, but there is no guarantee that requests can be accommodated. At the beginning of each school year, Resident Advisors (RA's) will work with each roommate pair and talk over issues that commonly cause conflict. This conversation results in a written roommate agreement between roommates that addresses each of these issues. If your student is having a conflict with their roommate, we recommend that your student contact the RA Depending on the circumstances, the RA can help facilitate a discussion about the problem and possibly re-write the roommate agreement. The University also offers the Mediation and Advocacy Program which allows for student mediators to facilitate an agreement between roommates or multiple involved parties to a conflict/disagreement. What is the difference between "meals" and "flex"/"bonus flex"?
A meal is an all-you-can eat buffet. Meals can be used at Reinert and Griesedieck Dining Halls and Terra Ve. If students use all of their allotted meals during a specific week, they may purchase additional meals at the dining halls for a set price in flex dollars. Meals renew every Thursday and unused meals do not carry over.
Flex points are used to purchase food. They should be used at times when "all you can eat" is not what you have in mind, or if you have used all of your meals for the week. Flex can be used at all Billiken Dining Services locations and they will transfer from the fall semester to the spring semester. Any remaining at the end of the spring semester will be forfeited.
Bonus Flex is just like Flex, with two exceptions: you buy these funds in addition to your meal plan, and these funds do not expire at the end of the semester. Students with a Meal Plan may deposit increments of $50 to increase their food service purchases and an additional bonus is then added to the student's Bonus Flex account. These funds are used only to purchase food.
Where can I add more money to my student's billiken bucks?
Billiken Bucks can be added online by visiting Parking & Card Services.
What if my student wants to change their meal plan?
Students may change their meal plans once per semester. To do so they may visit Housing and Residence Life Office (Village Brown Hall) or Parking & Card Services Office (DuBourg Hall, Room 33).
Who takes care of the students who live in the residence halls?
Three hundred student staff (resident advisors, security desk staff, etc), professional live in residence life hall coordinators, graduate assistants, administrative support staff and housekeepers help provide support for your student living on campus. The department of Campus Ministry also provides additional support and development opportunities for students.
Is there a curfew?
No, but on floors in Marguerite Hall, Notre Dame Hall, Griesedieck Complex and Reinert Hall, students are not permitted to visit opposite sex floors between 1-7am Sunday through Thursday and 2-7 am Friday and Saturday.
Can I see the room my student will be living in?
Room dimensions are available on the Housing and Residence Life webpage (click on the building on the left links and then on floor plans). We cannot show the exact room your student will occupy, but for first year students, a tour of the building in which they live will allow you to see a showroom that is similar to the one your student will occupy.
What comes standard in a room and when will we find out what room my student has received?
One bed (mattress sizes: 75" for Marguerite and 80" all others), one desk, one desk chair, one dresser. Some buildings have rooms with built in closets or moveable wardrobes. The apartments will have additional furnishings and those can be found on the Housing and Residence Life page, depending on location.

What is a loft kit and how does my student get one?
Lofts help maximize floor space in your room. Each loft kit will allow the bed of one person to be elevated (72 inches from floor to top of mattress) on an additional set of bed ends that are then secured by support braces. This allows enough room below the bed for a desk and dresser to be placed between and beneath the bed. Loft kits will be present in any room where they can be utilized. Staff will install the Loft Kit unless you indicate you do not want the bed lofted, in which case the kit can be returned to the University. Otherwise, the loft kit is the property of the University and as with all furnishings, must remain in the room.
