A longtime Saint Louis University professor has passed away. John Gammel, Ph.D., professor emeritus and former chair of the department of physics died Saturday, Oct. 15. He was 87.
Dr. Gammel joined the SLU faculty in July 1974 as a professor of physics and was appointed department chair that same year. He was a member of the faculty until retiring as professor emeritus in 1991.
After receiving his undergraduate ('44) and graduate ('46) degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, Gammel went on to earn his doctoral degree at Cornell University in 1950.
Prior to joining SLU, Dr. Gammel was a staff member at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico, and also a professor of physics at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Gammel is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Juanita; children George, Cheryl, John C., Tinka and Peter; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was living in Los Alamos, New Mexico, at the time of his death.
