Ameren Missouri, Casa de Salud and Saint Louis University are partnering to present the first Día Deportivo (Sporting Day) in St. Louis. The competition will be held Saturday, April 21, at SLU's new Medical Center Stadium.
Jorge Riopedre, the executive director of Casa de Salud, said the event will be loosely modeled on an Olympic-style competition so that people of different Hispanic ethnicities that call St. Louis home can engage in friendly competition based on their countries of origin.
Games will include an obstacle course, relay races, soccer skills, long jumps, and sprints, and will conclude with a one mile "fun run."
"A large part of Casa de Salud's work is a commitment to disease prevention through community engagement," Riopedre said. "To that end, this Día Deportivo will be a celebration of family, community and healthy living for the Latino community of the Saint Louis region."
"And we are very pleased that Ameren Missouri will make it possible for families from both sides of the river to come and participate."
Brian Leonard, manager of business and community relations for Ameren Missouri, said the company is committed to supporting the community as a sponsor of events that reflect the region's diversity.
"The individual differences among people and their cultures are important factors that greatly contribute to our region's overall vitality," Leonard said. "At Día Deportivo, people can socialize and enjoy a day of fun while also improving their health.
"It's going to be an outstanding event that showcases the uniqueness and diversity of our community. Ameren Missouri is proud to team with Casa de Salud and Saint Louis University."
Casa's medical staff and volunteers from SLU's Doisy College of Health Sciences will be on hand to offer first aid, raise awareness about health and fitness issues, and to highlight services available to the community.
In addition, a variety of Latin vendors will provide food and drinks for the participants, and winners from each event will receive awards.
