Current students must apply to be eligible for the Boeing, Regan, and Circle of Five Scholarships. The Boeing application is generally due in early November, and the Regan and Circle of Five applications are due in March. Applications are handled through the online Scholarship Suite tool available through the SLU portal.
Decisions on these awards are made by math/stat department faculty, and are separate from general scholarships and awards that the university manages for both incoming and existing students.
Past winners of these awards include many of the finest students to graduate from this department.
Scholarships for Continuing Students
Francis Regan Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is given each year to mathematics majors who will be seniors the following year. It was established in honor of Francis Regan on his retirement from SLU in 1971. Students apply for these multi-thousand dollar scholarships in the Spring, via the online Scholarship Suite tool available through the SLU portal.
Circle of Five Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is given each year to mathematics majors who plan to teach mathematics at the secondary level. It was established by Richard Winter in 2009. Students apply for these multi-thousand dollar scholarships in the Spring, via the online Scholarship Suite tool available through the SLU portal.
Boeing BOLD Scholarship
The Boeing Corporation sponsors the BOLD — Boeing Opportunity for Leadership Development — scholarship program at Saint Louis University. The BOLD program provides Boeing a unique opportunity to select and mentor SLU students with the best leadership potential who are majoring in business, engineering, computer science or mathematics.
To be eligible for the award, a student must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a sophomore, junior or senior (NOT graduating prior to May 2021) who has declared their primary major as either mathematics, data science, computer science, engineering, or business.
- Minimum GPA required is 3.2.
- Applicants must show the potential to make a significant contribution to the University's goal of providing a culturally, professionally, and globally diverse learning environment.
- Must be a US Citizen or Permanent resident.
- Preference for applicant to have a secondary major, minor or certificate in any of the above five areas.
- Prior recipients are eligible for this scholarship with re-application.
Applications are sought in the Fall, via the online Scholarship Suite tool available through the SLU portal.
Awards for Graduating Seniors
The winners of these awards are chosen by faculty in the department of mathematics and statistics. Students do not apply for these awards.
James D. Collins Outstanding Senior
Each year, the department faculty recognizes a single graduating mathematics major as the recipient of the James D. Collins Outstanding Senior award. The Collins award is the highest honor within the College of Arts and Sciences, with each department recognizing a single graduate. The winner receives an engraved medallion and is recognized in the precommencement program, as well as at the department's year-end reception.
Garneau Award
The Garneau award established in 1924 by Mrs. James Garneau in memory of her husband. It is an annual cash award to one or more of the most outstanding graduating seniors in mathematics.
Awards for Undergraduates
Al and Shelly Beradino Award
The Al and Shelly Beradino Award is an annual award given each year to an undergraduate math major who has exhibited a collegial spirit within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics with a commitment to its programs.
The Calculus Award
For students satisfying the criteria below who have not completed the calculus sequence.
The Math Award
For students satisfying the criteria below who have completed the calculus sequence and are currently enrolled in a math class beyond calculus.
The winners of the Math and Calculus awards are chosen by faculty in the department of mathematics and statistics. Students do not apply for these awards. Eligible students:
- Must have finished Calculus I
- Must be enrolled in a math course in the spring semester (Calculus II or higher)
- Must be a freshman or sophomore, i.e., be in their first or second year at SLU (we go by length of time, not by hours completed)
- Must have mostly A's in their math courses
The Statistics Award
The Statistics Awards recognize outstanding achievement by undergraduates in a 3000-level or a 4000-level statistics course.
Awards for Graduate Students
Andrews Award
The John J. Andrews Award is given each year to an outstanding graduate student for scholarship and service to the department.
Freese Award
The Raymond Freese Award is given annually to a graduate assistant for excellence in teaching. The award was established in 2014 by a gift from the family of Dr Freese, a long-time faculty member of the department.
