This year's commencement speaker was associate professor of biology Elena Bray Speth, Ph.D., who spoke about what she sees in her students as an educator.

"Being men and women for others is not necessarily about doing great things," she said. "It's a way of being every day, in the small things. It's a habit." She also described her own evolving journey in academia and how she did not figure it out all at once.

"Uncertainty about your direction may come at times in life, and what comes is uncomfortable," she said. "But it can become a powerful catalyst for your growth and change."

University President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D., gave the salutation. He spoke about the history of the pursuit of knowledge through the institution of the university, and the Catholic, Jesuit tradition of directing that pursuit to a noble purpose.

"Our mission ultimately speaks to our pioneering history born in the city that shares our name," he said. "Regardless of how you came here, I'm confident that you realize Saint Louis University is a special place.

"In the finest Jesuit tradition, we fundamentally commit ourselves to sustained intellectual inquiry and reflection," he said. "More than anything else, at Saint Louis University we are committed to prepare each student to live a life that is meaningful and purposeful, distinguished by compassionate engagement with the world and lifelong dedication to learning and service."
