Learning Community Program Hosts ‘LC Ed Talks’
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the Learning Community Program at Saint Louis University hosted the second annual “LC Ed Talks.”
This event was a faculty-led community experience for the Learning Community Medallion Program. By attending Medallion program events and completing the program, Learning Community students can earn a medallion, which features a fleur-de-lis and can be worn at graduation.
The event, which 200 Learning Community students attended, provided first-year students the opportunity to engage in cross-disciplinary academic discussion.
Three faculty members from different disciplines affiliated with the Learning Community Program gave short presentations and participated in a brief question-and-answer session following their talks.
Michelle Sabick, Ph.D., dean of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation, and Technology, presented “The Biomechanics of Baseball Pitching”; Amber Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Communication, addressed “Negotiating More, (Mis)labeling the Body: A Tale of Intersectionality”; and Jerome Katz, Ph.D., professor in entrepreneurship of the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, spoke about “Entrepreneurship as World Making.”
"As a nursing student, I thought it was interesting to hear talks from professors that I would have never heard from otherwise," said Katie Miller, a sophomore in the Micah learning community. "I never would have had the opportunity to learn about engineering or entrepreneurship in any of my nursing classes."
