New Billiken Mascot Makes Debut
A new mascot for the Saint Louis University Billikens was revealed between the women’s and men’s soccer matches during a special event in Robert R. Hermann Stadium Sept. 20.
A number of local sports mascots, including Louie (St. Louis Blues), Ruffy (River City Rascals), Izzy (Gateway Grizzlies) and Bushwhacker (St. Louis Ambush), were on hand to greet their friend, following a modern makeover.
The new mascot reflects the current look of the Billiken logo, which debuted in November 2015. The logo and various other athletic marks — last updated in the late 1990s — are paired with a font created specifically for SLU's exclusive use.
"The new Billiken embodies the spirit of our iconic, one-of-a-kind mascot who brings luck to our athletic programs and smiles to the faces of our fans," said Chris May, director of athletics, when the logo was unveiled last year.
After the introduction Tuesday, fans had a chance to take photos with the new mascot, and a select number of fans in attendance received a special rally towel with the updated Billiken logo on it.
The previous Billiken mascot was celebrated as well, with a party during the women’s game, complete with cake and cookies. Free pizza was also served during half-time to the first 100 student fans in attendance.
There will be plenty of other opportunities to see the new Billiken mascot in action in the coming weeks. Among them, the mascot will be on campus during this year’s Homecoming and Family Weekend, Sept. 22-25, most notably at the golf cart parade, which begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the clock tower.
