Students Compete to Stay Afloat at SLU Cardboard Cup
Saint Louis University hosted the first-ever Cardboard Cup on April 28, at which teams of students were challenged to design and race cardboard canoes.

Nearly 50 students took part in the competition, which was hosted by the Chaifetz Center for Entrepreneurship and the Association of Parks College Students. The winning team received $500.
Teams had one hour to construct canoes out of cardboard, duct tape and plastic garbage bags. Afterward, they raced their creations across the indoor pool at Simon Recreation Center. Successful canoes were able to hold racers without sinking and make it across the pool at least once.
Entries were judged by Khalia Collier, owner of the St. Louis Surge; Curt Jones, founder and inventor of Dippin’ Dots; and Capt. Kevin East, captain with Gateway Arch Riverboat Cruises.
The winners of the race and the $500 were junior John Pasquesi and sophomores Luke Taylor, Scott Lambert and Benjamin Krapu.
Up next for the Chaifetz Center for Entrepreneurship is the Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy. Spots are still available for high school students wishing to attend the academy. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Mikaila Ulmer, founder and CEO of Me & the Bees Lemonade.
