Saint Louis University has been recognized as a top 50 program in the recently released College Consensus Best Colleges for Veterans 2018 rankings.
SLU offers discounted tuition rates for select programs, participates in the Yellow Ribbon program and liaisons with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to help maximize student military benefits. In addition, SLU’s Veteran Student Association provides a network of support, mentoring those considering a military career or transitioning out of one.
Daniel Halley, a Navy veteran and now a senior in the biology pre-med program, shared the pluses SLU offered as he left the Navy and returned to civilian life.
"As I began to explore my educational options prior to leaving the Navy, I looked for a university that was rigorous with academics and military friendly,” Halley said. “It was important to me to know that the campus supported service members, veterans and military affiliated family members. I chose Saint Louis University because they offered everything that I was looking for in an educational experience. Starting with my first on-campus visit, I experienced the welcoming environment provided by SLU's students, staff and faculty.”
Halley, who currently serves as president of the University’s Student Veterans Association, said that SLU values them as members of the SLU community.
“From both an academic and social viewpoint, SLU does a phenomenal job preparing me for a successful future. The combination of the teaching the whole student, being a top 100 school, and knowing that I always have resources to facilitate my success, is why Saint Louis University was unquestionably my top choice," Halley added.
Halley reflects a view that is also strongly felt by SLU faculty, including Tracy Chapman, Ph.D., dean of the School for Professional Studies where a variety of online programs provide additional options for students.
"We are fortunate to have military and veteran students as part of the SLU community,” Chapman said. “The lived experiences they bring to the classroom enrich discussions and contribute to learning for all. In the School for Professional Studies we are proud to serve military and veteran students. Our online programs provide increased access to a SLU education. Students from across the nation as well as the world are able to earn a SLU degree while serving their country and communities."
The University is also a member of the Service Members Opportunity Colleges consortium, which ranks SLU among the Top 20 national universities on the U.S. News & World Report list of Best Colleges for Veterans.
