Program in Physical Therapy to Offer Foot Orthotic Fabrication

Physical therapy students in the sixth and final year of their program are in need of faculty and staff volunteers, considered to be mild over- or underpronators, to participate in an individualized foot and ankle evaluation and subsequent fabrication of a pair of foot orthotics.

As part of their course work, the students are required to examine the foot and ankle region, determine an appropriate foot orthotic, and fabricate the pair of orthotics in order to apply their clinical reasoning and psychomotor skills.

Volunteers need to be available from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, for the foot and ankle examination and can choose one of any of the following sessions for the foot orthotic fabrication: Nov. 22, Nov. 29, or Dec. 1.

Each of these sessions will occur from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and all sessions will take place at the Doisy College of Health Sciences. There is no charge for the foot orthotics, but each volunteer needs to be willing to wear shorts during the sessions and bring a pair of walking or running shoes in which the orthotics can be used.

Those interested in assisting the students in the Program in Physical Therapy develop their assessment and orthotic fabrication skills while receiving a free pair of individualized foot orthotics should call or email the course coordinator, Ann Hayes, DPT, in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, at hayesam@slu.edu or at 314-977-8534.
