Student Advising Initiative Team Seeks Community Input

As announced last week, the Magis Operational Excellence Program has launched a new initiative team focused on undergraduate student advising. This team is focused on the design stage of the initiative in which a new model for undergraduate advising will be recommended (implementation planning will come later in a later stage).

The team has been charged to consider student advising through a broad lens in order to explore what advising at SLU will look like in the future and to identify ways to better integrate academic and career/vocational planning going forward.

At this time, the team is seeking input and expertise from numerous stakeholder groups on campus and is exploring alternative advising models. The team’s community engagement plan calls for input from students, staff, and faculty at two important points in the design stage: first, the team will gather information about what works and doesn’t in the current advising system and actively solicit the SLU community’s ideas for the future of advising. Second, the team will share preliminary design ideas and solicit feedback on possible new designs for advising at SLU.

Currently, the team is beginning to schedule meetings with key stakeholder groups (e.g., academic advisors and advising leadership, student groups, career development specialists, faculty groups, etc.). Open forum sessions for any member of the SLU community also will be scheduled soon. The primary goals for these sessions are for the team to better understand what works and what doesn’t in SLU’s current advising system and to hear the community’s creative new ideas for what advising at SLU might look like going forward. 

The team also has created two anonymous online feedback forms — one for students and one for faculty and staff.
