Learning Technologies Committee Announces Updates
12/08/2017
The University-wide Learning Technologies Advisory Committee (LTAC) has undergone significant changes this year. Although the committee has existed for a number of years, it has been restructured to increase faculty input in technology decision-making. Specifically, the committee focuses on SLU-supported technologies directly related to teaching and learning.
LTAC has been charged to assess, prioritize and fulfill institutional needs related to teaching and learning technologies including the course/learning management system, lecture capture software, web conferencing tools and classroom technologies.
During the 2017-2018 academic year, LTAC’s main priorities will be to review the course/learning management system currently used at SLU (Blackboard) to determine whether or not a change should be made sometime in the future; continue piloting a potential lecture capture replacement for Tegrity; identify institutional needs related to distance education; understand the broader teaching and learning technology needs of SLU faculty and students; and assess the uses of the new Academic Technology Commons and its achievement of its intended goals for faculty and student engagement.
LTAC is formally situated within a new IT governance structure. The committee now reports jointly to the Provost and the CIO. Members are primarily faculty members, who serve a representational role for their colleges/schools.
A small number of staff members also serve on the committee, in non-voting roles. They serve as resources to the committee.
Student government groups also were invited to designate representatives to the committee. Co-chairs of the committee are Kyle Collins, assistant vice president for technology information and Debra Lohe, Ph.D., director of the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.
The new structure and membership of the committee are intended to strengthen the role of faculty in decisions affecting academic technologies.
SLU community members may offer their input to the committee in several different ways:
- By contacting their school or college representatives. The current membership list is available here.
- By completing this online form.
- By contacting the co-chairs of the committee, Kyle Collins and Debra Lohe.
