Summer Tips: Prevent Poison Ivy Pain This Summer

06/30/2017

As the SLU community heads out for a weekend of holiday fun, SLUCare physicians have some tips for those venturing off trail or even into backyards that may conceal problem plants, specifically poison ivy. Jane Tucker, M.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine, has these recommendations to avoid this common summer hazard.

PREVENT POISON IVY PAIN

The best prevention is avoidance.

Learn how to identify poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac in all seasons. Stay on cleared paths and wear protective clothing when you think you may be at risk.

After exposure, wash all affected areas as soon as possible with soap and water to remove the resin called uroshiol. This oil can be transferred from clothing, gloves, shoes and even your pets to your skin. The oil can cause an itchy blistering rash. Uroshiol can remain potent for years so if you put away gardening tools or items that have touched the poisonous plant without washing them, you can still develop a rash the next time you use those things. Likewise, burning poison ivy can send oil droplets into the air and can cause serious reactions.

At least half of the adult population in the United States is sensitive to poison ivy. If you get a rash, start with home remedies such as cold compresses, calamine lotion, antihistamines or a topical steroid cream. If the rash becomes very severe or is in uncomfortable areas, you may need to see your primary care provider for a prescription of an oral or injectable corticosteroid and an anti-itch antihistamine. Sometimes a secondary bacterial infection can occur and an antibiotic may be necessary.

Remember, "Leaves of three, let them be."
