Risk Management Issues Guidance for University Vehicle Use
The Department of Risk Management and Insurance has updated guidance for those driving University-owned vehicles or rental cars used for SLU business. The guidance pertains to incidents involving accidents.
The guidance is as follows:
- Stop immediately. Do not leave the scene if possible until a police report has been taken.
- Take steps to prevent additional accidents at the scene. Pull safely over.
- Call the police and the Department of Public Safety at 314-977-3000 if on campus.
- Get the information of the other drivers involved including:
- Name, address, phone & driver’s license number.
- Make, model, year & VIN of other vehicle.
- License plate number.
- Insurance information—carrier, policy number, date, agent & phone.
- Get names, addresses & phone number of any witnesses.
- When able, notify Risk Management at 314-977-3952.
- Stop immediately. Do not leave the scene if possible until a police report has been taken.
- Contact the local police department.
- Get the information of the other drivers and witnesses as outlined above.
- When able, notify both your SLU department and Risk Management at 314-977-3952.
Departments are responsible for the first $1,500 of damage on all automobile claims in which the University makes a payment. If a department is involved in an automobile accident with a third party, and it is determined to be an at fault accident of the University department, the Department is responsible for the first $1,500.00 of damage to the department’s vehicle as well as the first $1,500.00 of damage to the third party's vehicle.
