Welcome Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Candidates This Week

Starting Thursday, some of the nation's most gifted high school students will be on campus for scholarship interview. Students, faculty and staff are urged to extend a warm welcome to our visitors.

Candidates begin arriving on Thursday, March 23, for an optional overnight stay in the residence halls. On Friday, interviewees will attend a class, have lunch with current Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. scholars and meet with academic departments.

In addition, the candidates can opt to take a fun trolley tour of the city that includes the Central West End and Busch Stadium or an expansive tour of the SLU campus, including such must-see spots as the Busch Student Center and St. Francis Xavier College Church.

The weekend will officially kick-off at 6:15 p.m. Friday with the welcome reception, giving interviewers an informal opportunity to meet the candidates. The reception will be held in the atrium of the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business.

On Saturday, leaders from the St. Louis community as well as University alumni will join current Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars and SLU faculty and staff in interviewing the finalists. The division of enrollment management would like to thank everyone who volunteered to be an interviewer.

SLU’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship is an academic award offered to students who have demonstrated leadership as agents of change or influence within their school and/or community activities.

In order to qualify for a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship, students must have an ACT score of 23 or higher, or SAT score of 1050 or higher (math and critical reading) and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. In addition to these academic credentials, potential Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars must demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of diversity in our society and demonstrate leadership in the classroom, on campus and in the greater community.
