Student Health Center Issues Flu Guidance

01/25/2018

The Student Health Center (SHC) is reporting several cases of influenza and has issued the following guidance aimed at protecting the SLU community’s health this flu season.

Any students, faculty or staff members who have flu symptoms – fever, severe body aches and cough – should not go to class and stay home unless they are coming to SHC for an appointment. Those experiencing these symptoms should not return to class until she or he has been fever-free, with a temperature under 100 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours.

The SHC and Student Health Services recommend that any student who has not gotten a flu shot get one. It takes two weeks to build up immunity, but it is possible this flu season could last a few more months. While there have been some reports that the vaccine this year may be less effective, it can still reduce the likelihood of getting the flu or reduce its severity if a person does.

Individuals with the following conditions more at risk for developing flu-related complications:

People with these conditions should definitely consider getting a flu shot if they haven't done so already, and should take extra precautions to avoid interaction with anyone exhibiting symptoms of illness.

Students can get a flu shot at the SHC from 9 to 11:30 a.m., or 1 to 4 p.m.

Staff and faculty members may get their shots from Employee Health on Thursdays from 7:30 to 11 a.m., or 1 to 3 p.m.

This flu season is predicted to be a bad one and the Centers for Disease Control have also issued guidance. More information is also available from SLUCare's Ken Haller, M.D.
