University to Host Conversation About 'Segregation by Design'

Jonathan Smith, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and community engagement, Chet Gillis, Ph.D., interim provost, and SLU historians will join other local scholars and community leaders for a discussion of the book Segregation by Design: Conversations and Calls for Action in St. Louis.
The book event will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at the Center for Global Citizenship. Light refreshments will be provided.

12:30 p.m. - Welcome by Chet Gillis, Ph.D., interim provost, Saint Louis University
12:40 to 1:10 p.m. - Book overview by the editors, Catalina Freixas, Ph.D., and Mark Abbott, Ph.D.
- Freixas is a professor of architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
- Abbott is professor emeritus of history at Harris-Stowe State University.
1:10 to 1:30 p.m. - Discussion of Chapter 9 Essay
- "The Day After Segregation: Thinking Through the Unimaginable," Jonathan Smith, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and community engagement and assistant professor of African American Studies, Saint Louis University.
1:30 to 2 p.m. - Panel Discussion including:
- Lorri Glover, Ph.D., John Francis Bannon Professor of History, Saint Louis University.
- Christopher Tinson, Ph.D., associate professor of history and director of African American Studies, Saint Louis University.
- Willie P. Stallworth, pastor of Unity Lutheran Church, East St. Louis.
