Lewis Named Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
07/19/2019
Associate Provost Michael Lewis, Ph.D., has been named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Lewis’s appointment is effective Saturday, Sept. 1.

Interim Provost Chester “Chet” Gillis announced the appointment on Thursday, July 18.
Lewis, an associate professor of chemistry, has been a member of the Saint Louis University faculty since 2004. He has been recognized by his colleagues in the college with the William V. Stauder, S.J., Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Natural Sciences.
He has served as associate provost since 2013, overseeing the University’s Office of Faculty Affairs. In that role, Lewis has led University-level initiatives related to faculty development, faculty hiring, contracts, promotion and tenure policies, workload policies and other efforts aimed at serving SLU faculty members and departments.
Lewis takes over the role from former dean Christopher Duncan, Ph.D. Duncan, whose term as dean ends Saturday, Aug. 31, will join the faculty in the Department of Political Science after a sabbatical.
A national search will be conducted to select the college’s next dean, with an appointment expected by July 2020.
