A highlight of Saint Louis University’s 2018 bicentennial celebration is back with a special series of presentations highlighting interesting Jesuits in St. Louis and SLU history.

During the noon hour on four Thursdays during March and April, Pius XII Memorial Library is sponsoring a “Legends and Lore Spring Marathon” in the second-floor gallery of Pius XII Memorial Library on the SLU campus, 3650 Lindell Blvd. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to enjoy during the discussions which are free and open to the public.

The presentations will be delivered by Stephen Werner, Ph.D., of the Department of Theological Studies and University Archivist Emeritus John Waide.

SESSION 1:  Thursday, March 14:

Something in the Water:  Influential St. Louis Jesuits, will provide brief sketches on interesting Jesuit priests in St. Louis and SLU history.

SESSION 2:  Thursday, March 28

Dismas Clark--The Hoodlum Priest—And Frank Sinatra will focus on the life and work of Charles “Dismas” Clark, S.J., a Jesuit priest who in 1959 opened in St. Louis the first halfway house, Dismas House, to support men coming out of prison. Father Clark was the subject of a 1961 movie, The Hoodlum Priest, which starred Don Murray as Father Clark. Werner has been doing significant research for a book about Father Clark.

SESSION 3:  Thursday, April 11:

Daniel Lord, S. J.:  The Restless Flame – Thinking Big in a Parochial World, will feature a showing of a 42-minute film produced by Werner on the life and work of Daniel Lord, S.J. The film premiered last year at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase.

SESSION 4:  Thursday, April 25:

Daniel Lord: The Jesuit Dynamo of the 20th Century. This final “Legends and Lore” session for the spring will be a more formal presentation on the life and work of Father Lord. Werner has completed a manuscript for a book on Father Lord, while Waide has developed several public exhibitions about Father Lord.
