Mev Puleo Scholarship Accepting Applications
03/01/2019
The Mev Puleo Scholarship in Latin American Theology, Politics and Culture is accepting applications for a summer 2019 immersion experience in San José, Costa Rica.
The Puleo Scholarship combines formal study and experiential learning to foster awareness and understanding of the people, religion, and culture of Latin America. This year’s immersion program will run from Tuesday, July 2 to Friday, August 2, at the Universidad Biblical Latinoamericana.
Mev Puleo was an educator, photojournalist and social change activist. A 1985 graduate of Saint Louis University, she used photographs and interviews to draw attention to the struggles and aspirations of the poor. Mev had a special love for the people of Latin America and traveled extensively to Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico and Haiti. Her vocation of advocacy, education and art was cut short by a malignant brain tumor. She died in January 1996 at the age of 32.
Her parents, Peter and Evelyn Puleo, established the Mev Puleo Scholarship in Latin American Theology, Politics and Culture in her honor with the hopes that scholarship recipients will become advocates for social justice like their daughter Mev.
The scholarship is open to all SLU undergraduate and graduate students, and applications can be downloaded here.
Applications are due by Friday, March 29, and all applicants will be interviewed by a committee comprised of faculty and past scholarship recipients.
The scholarship is sponsored by the Department of Theological Studies.
