University Common Core Proposal Set for Release

09/27/2019

Beginning in Fall 2018, the University Undergraduate Core Committee (UUCC) worked closely with the SLU community in a Common Core generation process that involved hundreds of students, faculty and staff members from both our St. Louis and Madrid campuses. Now, the UUCC is preparing to present a Core Proposal to the SLU community.

The committee plans to release the proposal on Tuesday, Oct.1.

The University community will now consider the proposal as the process toward the approval of SLU’s first Common Undergraduate Core continues through Spring 2020.

Next Steps

Oct. 1, 2019

The UUCC presents our proposal for a new Common Core at SLU to all members of the SLU community.  The proposal will go out to all SLU community members directly via email; it will also be available on the UUCC website: https://www.slu.edu/core/index.php

Oct. 1 to Oct. 18, 2019

Members of the UUCC will visit all colleges and schools that deliver Undergraduate programs to present and discuss the proposal. In addition to these formal presentations, the UUCC invites colleges, schools, and the SGA to submit further questions and requests for clarification by November 15th.

Nov. 15, 2019

The deadline for questions and requests for clarification, conveyed to the UUCC via the Student and Faculty Councils and Assemblies of colleges and schools with undergraduate programs is November 15, 2019.  These should be submitted directly to the Director of the Core (ellen.crowell@slu.edu or core@slu.edu).

Nov. 15, 2019 to January 2020

The UUCC will work through all questions and requests for clarification, with a goal of bringing a final Core Proposal to the SLU community by the end of the Fall 2019 or the start of Spring 2020 semester.

March 1, 2020 and Beyond

Deadline for all Faculty Councils and Assemblies of colleges and schools with undergraduate programs to hold a simple “Yes/No” vote on the adoption of this proposal as our SLU Common Core. UUCC Bylaws outline voting procedures can be found here.

With University approval for a new Common Core in place by March 1, the UUCC will be able to move ahead with the next phase of our work, which is the operationalization and implementation of, first, a pilot year for some components of the Core (2021-2022) with a start date for all incoming students beginning no sooner than Fall 2022.

The UUCC looks forward to sharing its Core Proposal with the SLU community on Oct. 1st.
