Building Flooding Caused by Flash Floods Not Expected to Disrupt Start of Classes
Heavy downpours hit the St. Louis region Wednesday morning (Aug. 13), causing flash floods that shut down multiple roadways. Between 1-2 inches of rain fell in an hour, according to local weather reports.
Several cars were stranded in high waters along Lindell Boulevard near Saint Louis University, and other streets near the SLU campus were impacted as well.
The torrential rain also overwhelmed parts of the city's stormwater system, causing drains to overflow and back up into the basements of numerous SLU buildings. Some occupied spaces were also affected.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it’s not expected to impact the start of any classes next week.
Crews worked throughout the day Wednesday and overnight to extract the water. Industrial fans and dehumidifiers are expected to run continuously for several days to remove any additional moisture.
Once dry, all flooded spaces will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Other repairs will be made as needed.
