School of Medicine Accepting Summer Scholars Applicants
02/04/2020
Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine is accepting applications for its Summer Scholars Program for summer 2020. The program is designed to expose young people interested in careers in medicine and health care to the field.
The program focuses on introducing students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in medicine and health care.
During the three-week program, students meet with a variety of health care professionals, participate in a cadaver demonstration, complete a research project, join in a community service project and have opportunities to shadow physicians.
Coordinated with the assistance of first-year medical students, the program is provided to eligible applicants at a cost of $500. The program costs includes breakfast and lunch, ACT prep and all program activities.
The School of Medicine has hosted the Summer Scholars Program for more than ten years.
Daniel Blash, Ph.D., vice dean for diversity, equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer for the School of Medicine, said summer enrichment programs that focus on opening the field to students from underrepresented communities are critical to addressing barriers that may prevent them from pursuing educational and professional paths in the health care field.
“It is our hope the program will encourage participants to pursue a career in medicine and have a positive impact on increasing diversity in health-related careers,” Blash said.
