Information Sessions Slated for Geospatial Innovation Challenge
01/07/2020
SLU Innovation Department, ITS, and the Geospatial Institute (GeoSLU) Holding Geospatial Innovation Challenge
The Department of Innovation and SLU ITS, in partnership with the Geospatial Institute, will hold an Innovative Technology Challenge to encourage accessible geospatial innovation to advance Saint Louis University’s strategic plan.
Geospatial innovation encompasses many topics and technologies. Example projects might include:
- Using proximity technologies such as Bluetooth beacons to create “smart” common spaces on campus
- Location-focused mobile applications and engaging maps to help students connect around shared interests
- Leveraging drones and remote sensing data to apply computer vision for informed decision making
- Applying spatial artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning and image processing for public health or humanitarian mapping
Proposals do not need to be restricted to the examples above, and may focus on geospatial ideas not included in this list – the more creative, the better. Proposals are also not required to directly impact campus life or SLU, but direct connections and examples are encouraged.
Information sessions will be held:
- Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the Innovation Studio in the Academic Technology Commons at Pius XII Memorial Library
- Thursday, Jan. 16 at 12 p.m. in the Salus Center Auditorium (Room 1411)
- Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. in the Innovation Studio in the Academic Technology Commons at Pius XII Memorial Library
Members from the Geospatial Institute, ITS, Department of Innovation, and regional geospatial partners will be available for questions and guidance.
University community members are encouraged to attend information sessions and submit proposals as individuals or teams. Proposals will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 31. Winners will be selected and notified shortly after the specified deadline. Proposals should be submitted via email to edward.b.ignaczak@slu.edu.
Submissions should be no more than 1 page, single-spaced and include:
- The title of your proposal (product name, etc.)
- Your name and degree (or department if faculty)
- A brief description highlighting the key features of your project
- Answers to the following questions:
- How does your project contribute to SLU’s Strategic Plan?
- Are there any skills you or your group may need to learn to successfully complete the project?
- What skills do you or your group possess that will aid in the success of your project?
Projects and progress will be highlighted at the SLU Geo-Resolution conference on March 25, 2020. Projects will be submitted April 27, 2020 for final approval.
Successful projects will receive a cash prize and an invitation to present their project and participate in an upcoming geospatial-focused cohort of the SLUStart entrepreneurship program.
