New Guidance, Video Available on Title IX

In a message to the University community on Wednesday, Sept. 30, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX offered guidance including a video related to a new law released by the federal Department of Education governing Title IX on college campuses.

The Message

Good afternoon faculty and staff of Saint Louis University,

In May of this year, the Department of Education released a new law governing Title IX on college and university campuses across the country. The short video in the link below explains this new law and how it impacts you as a SLU employee. Please take a moment to watch the video and review the revised Title IX policy attached to this email. Additionally, SLU’s commitment to fostering an environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex is included below.

Notice of Nondiscrimination

Saint Louis University prohibits discrimination based on sex, which includes sexual harassment (which includes discrimination based on a student’s gender identity, gender expression, gender transition, transgender status, gender nonconformity, or sexual orientation), sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, gender-based stalking under this policy. Saint Louis University is committed to protecting the dignity of each person and all university policies, practices, and procedures are administered in a manner consistent with our Catholic, Jesuit identity.

The Title IX Sexual Harassment Policy addresses all forms discrimination on the basis sex, including sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual or gender-based stalking. Saint Louis University does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its educational, extracurricular, athletic, or other programs or in the context of admission or employment.  Sex discrimination is prohibited by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law that provides that: 

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. 

Sexual and gender-based harassment are also prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Missouri Human Rights Act, and other applicable statutes. The university’s response to sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking are also governed by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), as amended by the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (VAWA).
