AskSLU Toolbox Helps Faculty Get Ready for the Fall 2021 Semester
08/17/2021
Information Technology Services (ITS) has been focused this summer on preparing technology and classrooms for the start of the fall semester at Saint Louis University.
ITS has developed a summary of online resources below to help support faculty with technology specific to teaching.
Additionally, faculty can access a two-page high-level overview of faculty specific technology here. Faculty also can review additional Teaching and Learning knowledge resources located here at the ask.slu.edu knowledge base.
Please review the resources available and contact the ITS Service Desk at 314-977-4000 if you need any additional assistance. The AskSLU team members are here to help.
Schedule Training or In-Person Consultation
The ATC is offering three training sessions at the beginning of the Fall semester for our most widely used academic technologies: Classroom technology, Panopto, Zoom and Respondus. We will provide a bit of a deeper dive into each of these along with a question & answer period after the session. These sessions will be offered in person and virtually via Zoom. Click on this link to sign up for one of the sessions below.
Sessions will be offered on these dates:
- Monday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m.– Davis-Shaughnessy 171 or virtual via Zoom
- Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. – Davis-Shaughnessy 171 or virtual via Zoom
- Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. – Davis-Shaughnessy 171 or virtual via Zoom
We are also offering individual in-person consultation for classroom technology. For faculty working in a classroom this semester that you are unfamiliar with, this might be a great option to ensure they fully understand the classroom technology. Faculty can sign up for one of these sessions here.
Canvas
Canvas is SLU’s learning management system and serves to keep students and faculty connected through hosted exams, assignments, communication, and other relevant resources. Canvas is replacing Blackboard Learn in Fall 2021. If faculty is seeking technical support for Canvas, the first line of support is through Canvas.
Faculty can reach them directly through the Canvas chat feature or by phone at 314-977-4000 and pressing option 3. Canvas support is offered 24/7 through these options.
Faculty looking for training sessions and materials can learn more about your options online.
Panopto
Panopto is SLU’s lecture capture tool. It can be used to record live lectures, pre-record and share lectures with PowerPoint presentations as well as upload and store other videos such as Zoom recordings. Basic instructions on how to record a lecture are available online.
Zoom
Zoom is SLU’s platform for live, real-time video and audio conferencing, collaboration, chat and webinars. It is used to facilitate meetings and remote learning. All faculty, staff and currently enrolled students have a Zoom license.
Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor
The LockDown Browser is a secure web browser used for online testing through Canvas. Monitor is a tool that works in conjunction with the browser to proctor students automatically using their web cams. A brief overview and access to a quick start guide can be found here.
Classroom Technologies and Support
Classroom technology consists of hardware specific to classroom instruction such as Crestron displays, cameras and projectors. A brief overview of our classroom technology can be found here.
The SLU ITS technical support team will be spread out over campus the first two weeks of classes to help support urgent needs quickly. Please look for ITS staffers in AskSLU shirts and flag them down. You can also call 314-977-4000. Please let the technician know that you have an urgent classroom issue and ITS will dispatch someone to the location. Additionally, the phone icon on the Crestron AV panel in the classrooms will directly dial the ITS Service Desk.
