The Saint Louis University Athletic Training Program recently announced Scott Goldman, Ph.D., as the featured speaker for the annual SLU Athletic Training Speaker Series and Recognition Ceremony this spring. Goldman serves the Golden State Warriors as the team’s Consulting Performance Psychologist.
Goldman’s speaker series presentation, We are Better Together: A Team Approach to Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being for Athletes and Health Professionals, will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022 at in the Health Sciences Education Union auditorium on SLU’s medical campus.
The event is presented by the SLU chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the national Athletic Training honor society; SLU Athletic Training Society (SLATS); and SLU Student Government Association.
Goldman provides clinical and performance psychology to the athletes. Additionally, he provides psychological and human system expertise to the head coach, general manager, and vice president as well as their staffs within a variety of responsibilities including talent acquisition, talent management, and education, as well as provide insights so they can process and generate solutions when managing talent and organizational demands.
Goldman also is the creator of the Athletic Intelligence Quotient (AIQ), an intelligence test that assesses the innate cognitive abilities that are most utilized in attaining, developing, and applying athletic skills, strategies, and tactics. The AIQ is being used by Olympic, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, and MLB teams, as well as multiple Power 5 Universities and E-Sport teams.
“I will be discussing how providing the best care is based on two principles: first, patient-centered care where the goal of the providers is to educate the patient so the patient can take the lead of their own care because they are well informed and second, treatment team modality where a team of providers collaborate to ensure the patient receives best practices and top-notch treatment,” Goldman said.
Goldman said he hopes the attendees are able to come away with an appreciation for the importance of mental health.
“It is an honor to be able to talk with the next generation of talented individuals,” he said. “I hope students who attend can learn how to fold mental health and wellness into their treatment for others as well as being able to secure a high level of self-care.”
After the Goldman's presentation, there will be a panel discussion expanding upon the topics addressed during the speech. The panel will include: Eric Anderson, chair of the SLU student well-being committee; Angie Bradley, wellness coordinator for Billiken athletics; and Tim Howell, Ed.D., SLU Athletic Training Associate Professor.
SLU Athletic Training Program Director Anthony Breitbach, Ph.D., said he was excited that Goldman will be able to address attendees on a topic as important as mental health.
“We are so fortunate to have an international expert like Dr. Goldman to present on the mental health and well-being of athletes and health professionals,” Dr. Breitbach said. “Dr. Goldman’s roots in the St. Louis area will help him provide local context to this essential and important issue.”
The 10th Annual Athletic Training Speaker Series and Recognition Ceremony, supported by the SLU Student Government Association, is free of charge and open to the public. In addition to the presentation, the event will also include the induction ceremony of SLU’s Alpha Iota Chapter of Iota Tau Alpha and recognition of the program scholarship recipients.
