SLU Theatre and Dance Program Announces 2022–2023 Performance Season

04/01/2022

The Saint Louis Theatre and Dance Productions and Dance Program of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts has announced its line-up for the 2022–2023 Theatre and Dance Productions and Dance Season.

The pieces in the 2022–2023 season range from satirical masterpieces, reimagined classics, thought-provoking drama, and musical merriment.  The 2022–2023 season productions will be directed by Saint Louis Theatre and Dance Productions and Dance faculty, as well as guest directors, who will further offer students an educational experience while entertaining audiences.

The season begins in October with an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s 1836 masterpiece "The Government Inspector," Directed by Lucy Cashion. When the locals in a small town in Russia learn that an undercover government inspector is coming for a surprise visit, an unfortunate case of mistaken identity sends the village spiraling into a world of panic and greed.

The second production of the season, directed by Jackie Thompson, is the reimagined adaptation of a 700 year old work Dutch play. "Everybody," a one-act play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, is a modern retelling of Everyman, the most well-known and anthologized example of a medieval morality play, which was adapted from a Dutch play by an anonymous 15th century English writer.

Returning to the stage after a very reading in the fall of 2021, Sarah DeLappe’s work "The Wolves" will open in February of 2023. In this contemporary slice-of-life play, a girls’ indoor soccer team practices drills as they prepare for a succession of games. As they warm up and talk about life, the girls navigate the politics of their personal lives as well as the politics of the larger world. Each team member struggles to negotiate her individuality while being a part of a group.

The closing production of the season will see the classic board game brought to life right before your eyes. Directed by Nancy Bell, "Clue: The Musical" will ask the age old question “who dunnit?” — who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions. With a book by Peter DePietro, music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker and Vinnie Martucci, and lyrics by Tom Chiodo, this musical is designed to keep audiences on the edge of their seat.

Performances for "The Government Inspector" and "Everybody" will take place in the Saint Louis University U Theatre Main Stage.  Continuing its partnership with The Kranzberg Art Foundation, the spring performances will be held in the Kranzberg Black Box and Grandel Theatre, respectively.

Tickets and season subscriptions for the 2022–2023 Theatre and Dance will begin sales on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022.  All tickets and subscriptions should be purchased through MetroTix.com All performance venues are general non-assigned seating.
