Black History Month Events Scheduled Throughout February
02/01/2022
In a message to the SLU community Tuesday, the Division for Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement (DICE) shared events planned for Black History Month.
Greetings SLU community!
Black History Month was created by Carter G Woodson in 1926. He believed that if a race had no recorded history, it would lose its traditions and risk having its accomplishments and culture erased. Black history month is an opportune moment to reflect on #OccupySLU, the Clock Tower Accords, and Saint Louis University's efforts to support Black students, faculty, and staff. This month also reminds us to actively pursue equity and inclusive excellence on our campuses.
Every year, SLU's Black Student Alliance, Cross Cultural Center for Global Citizenship, African Student's Association, African American Male Scholars, African American Studies, Black Alumni Association, and the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement offer programming to remember, celebrate, and uplift our Black students, faculty, staff, and surrounding communities.
This year, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History named the national Black History Month theme, “Black Health and Wellness.” The theme explores the legacy of Black scholars, inventors, practitioners, and healers throughout the African Diaspora who have contributed to the survival, thriving, and wellness of African Americans and Americans in general through years of innovation, invention, and ingenuity.
Join us for a series of events as we celebrate Black history, including a keynote address titled "Trauma is not our only song and healing is not a foreign land" by Cheeraz Gormon.
Described as a multipotentialite, St. Louis native, Cheeraz Gormon is a cross genre writer, multi-medium storyteller, and public speaker whose work spans across the art forms of poetry, essay writing, photography, film production, music, and advertising.
