10-Digit Phone Dialing for Local Calls Begins June 16
06/10/2022
Starting Thursday, June 16, after 6 p.m., users will have to include the area code (without the preceding digit 1) when dialing local calls using SLU phone devices.
This change is necessary to accommodate the new national “988” National Suicide Prevention Lifeline starting this July—similar to "911" for emergencies and "311" for local government services. In addition, the change is needed for the new 557 area code overlays the current 314 geographical area to meet the increased demand for additional numbers.
Previously local calls within 314 only required seven digits after the access code 9. Now you will be required to dial 10 digits after the access code 9 for local calls.
For on-campus calls, SLU phone numbers within the 314-977-XXXX range can still be called by dialing just the last five digits. (7-XXXX)
The on-campus system 7 - prefix and calls to 911 will remain the same.
If users have local phone numbers programmed into the Speed Dial feature of your telephone
or fax machine, don’t forget to update them as well.
Updated Dialing Instructions
- On Campus: 7-XXXX
- Local Off Campus: 9 + 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number
- Long Distance: 9+1+ 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number
