06/29/2022
Saint Louis University hosted the 23rd International George Sand Colloquium. The conference, Frontiers, Borders & Gateways, was held June 13-14, 2022.
This conference offered scholars from around the world a unique opportunity to explore the works of the influential French writer George Sand (1804-1876). Papers ranged from “Sand and Dumas in the Indian Ocean: Transnational Networks of Romanticism” (Pratima Prasad, University of Massachusetts-Boston) to “Les régions ‘sauvages’ dans les Contes d’une grand-mère” (Lara Popic, Ryerson University) to “The bird woman of Nohant: George Sand’s avian relationships” (Anne Carson, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology).
Panel sessions were in French and English. The papers showcased the variety of approaches to Sand’s work and life, from ecocriticism to critical race theory. The keynote address, “The Gut as Gateway: Food-based interactions in Sand” (Manon Mathias, University of Glasgow), foregrounded the medical humanities in Sand’s novels.
This was the first-ever hybrid Sand Colloquium. Scholars traveled from Canada, France, Malta, and across the US to attend the conference in person. The online presence attracted a wide audience from Canada, Australia, Russia, the US, the UK, and Europe.
This conference, which was sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, put SLU at the center of a lively international exchange over the life and works of George Sand.
