09/20/2022
This fall the Division of Mission and Identity book club Mission will read "With God in Russia" a memoir by American-born Jesuit Fr. Walter Ciszek, who spent 23 years in the Soviet Union, including 15 years of imprisonment during the height of the cold war. The opening session will be Thursday, Oct. 6, at noon on Zoom.
The story is a powerful and inspiring witness to patience, endurance and the faith that sustained him. The book is "A story about the relationship between God and a person who wanted to give himself totally to God's service," said. James Martin, S.J.
At the opening session, the group will be joined by David Borgmeyer, Ph.D., a scholar in Russian Studies. Borgmeyer will set the scene for how Russia became the Soviet Union and what led up to the Cold War.
The closing luncheon Thursday, Nov. 17, at noon in the Sinquefield State Room, fourth floor DuBourg Hall. Borgmeyer will share his experience of living in Russia and some of his insights into the book, followed by a time for questions.
