William “Bill” Sydney Martin Wold, Ph.D., was a world-renowned scientist who discovered a new class of viral proteins that orchestrate the life and death of adenovirus-infected human cells. He applied his expertise to make important contributions to new treatments for viral infections and cancer.

He joined the Institute of Molecular Virology at Saint Louis University in 1974 and eventually became Chairman of the Department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology. Wold built a strong, collaborative, and productive department.

He was respected by faculty and trainees for his leadership, love of science, generous support, emphasis on providing world-class training, and positive attitude. To honor his memory and continue his legacy, the Bill Wold Memorial Lecture fund was established.
