Alpha Sigma Nu Inducts Newest Members

The Saint Louis University Chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society, inducted 105 new members on Sunday, April 23, in the Busch Student Center.

Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society permitted to bear the name Jesuit. It recognizes students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty, and service. Alpha Sigma Nu encourages its members to a lifetime pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others, and a commitment to the core principles of Jesuit education.

Founded in 1915, Alpha Sigma Nu has been the highest-ranking honor society at Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, and South Korea. With members in every state in the U.S. and 112 foreign countries, ASN now includes 32 universities and is over 80,000 members strong.

The name Alpha Sigma Nu signifies the Greek words Adelphotes Scholastikon Nikephor-own, meaning the company of honor students. The colors of the society are maroon and gold, the same colors that adorn the family seal of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.

Alpha Sigma Nu began as a fraternal honor society at Marquette University in 1915. The SLU chapter started in 1923, and a sister organization, Gamma Pi Epsilon for female students, was formed in 1925. These complementary groups merged in 1973 to form Alpha Sigma Nu as it is known today.
