Saint Louis University’s Esports team has won the inaugural Immortals Winter Showcase.
The League of Legends event pitted four college programs against four North American Tier Two teams. On the college side, the four teams were SLU, Maryville University, Winthrop University, and the University of Mississippi. The Tier Two teams were CCG Esports, Mirage Alliance, Peach Cats, and Team Fish Taco.
“The competition was meant to see if collegiate esports has caught up as a valid path to pro, which SLU proved that it was by taking first place after beating Winthrop University in the finals,” said SLU Esports Director Nicholas Chiu.
The double-elimination tournament began Saturday, Dec. 9. SLU faced Peach Cats and won 1-0. In round two, SLU stayed unbeaten by defeating Maryville. After earning a bye in round three, SLU faced off against Winthrop in the fourth round on Sunday, Dec. 10.
With a 1-0 win, SLU advanced to the grand finals, where it once again faced off with Winthrop. The Billikens picked up a 2-1 win in the best-of-three final to earn first place.
The SLU team was made up of Winston Herold (Winnie), Issac Chou (DARKWINGS), Aaron Li (Airren), William Lee (Doxa), and Frankie Lin (Zamudo).
