Enhancing University Cybersecurity: Automated Patching Implementation Scheduled for Server Security
12/14/2023
ITS has announced a significant step forward in fortifying the security of SLU's computing resources and safeguarding valuable data.
As part of the ongoing commitment to enhancing cybersecurity measures, the Information Technology Services department will be implementing automated patching for ITS-managed servers utilizing Linux Operating System. Targeted emails will be sent out to server and application contacts ahead of each patching event detailing the patches that will be installed and other relevant information.
Patching Schedule for Initial Deployment
- Test Servers Deployment:
- Saturday, Dec. 16, between midnight and noon
- Saturday, Jan. 20, between midnight and noon
- Production Servers Deployment:
- Saturday, Jan. 27, between midnight and noon
Note that during these patching windows, servers may experience intermittent reboots to ensure the successful installation of necessary updates. ITS appreciates the community's understanding and patience as it works towards bolstering the system's security.
Standardized Patching Schedule Going Forward
Moving forward, the standard process will be as follows:
- Test Servers: Every third Saturday of each month, between midnight and noon
- Production Servers: Every fourth Saturday of each month, between midnight and noon
This regular patching cadence will enable ITS to maintain and improve the security posture of the servers, ensuring that they remain updated with the latest security patches and enhancements.
The implementation of automated patching via the newly deployed HCL BigFix service is a critical measure in safeguarding the University's computing infrastructure against potential vulnerabilities. The community's collaboration and understanding are instrumental as ITS takes these necessary steps to bolster its cybersecurity efforts.
ITS understands the importance of the availability of systems and services. Every effort will be made to minimize disruption during these patching windows. ITS encourages everyone to plan accordingly.
Security and the protection of the University's data are critically important. ITS thanks the community for its support and cooperation as it continues its mission to maintain a secure computing environment for all.
