Risk Management Reminder: Bicycles and Scooters Not permitted in University Buildings

12/01/2023

To enhance safety and preserve campus infrastructure, SLU's Risk Management team has issued a reminder to the University community that bicycles and scooters, including e-bikes, are strictly prohibited inside University buildings, including residence halls.

The movement of bikes in and out of buildings can result in significant wear and tear on doors, floors, walls, and elevators. Moreover, the presence of lithium-ion batteries commonly found on e-bikes and scooters poses potential fire hazards, prompting the need for heightened safety measures.

To facilitate a secure environment for cyclists on campus, anyone bringing bicycles are strongly encouraged to register their bikes with the Department of Public Safety (DPS). In support of this initiative, DPS offers free bike locks to those who register their bicycles, providing an additional layer of security for these valuable assets. Interested individuals can find more details on the registration process and lock distribution on the DPS website.

While recognizing the importance of promoting sustainable and healthy transportation alternatives, the University has provided approximately 100 bike racks strategically placed throughout the campus. These racks offer a convenient and secure means for cyclists to park their bikes while working, attending classes, events, or residing on campus.

By adhering to these guidelines, the University community collectively contributes to maintaining a safe environment for all. Cooperation helps to ensure the longevity of campus facilities and fosters responsible and sustainable transportation practices.
