SLU Professor Bradley Bailey to Interview Emmy-Award Winning Costume Designer

10/12/2023

Saint Louis University associate professor of art history Bradley Bailey, Ph.D., will interview six-time Emmy Award-winning costume designer and entrepreneur Marina Toybina at an event at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 in the Steinberg Auditorium at Washington University.

Toybina will discuss her professional journey, how chess inspires her creative process, and fully explore her chess piece costume designs featured in Katy Perry’s iconic Super Bowl XLIX halftime performance, currently featured in WCHOF’s exhibition Sound Moves: Where Music Meets Chess.

The event will include a conversation with Bailey, a Sound Moves co-curator. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session, after which guests are invited to mix and mingle with cocktails and enjoy open chess play following the talk.

Born in Moscow, Russia, Toybina immigrated to the United States at age 11. After earning her degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, Toybina launched into the world of entertainment, and her creations are now seen worldwide in a variety of mediums, including television’s So You Think You Can Dance, The X Factor US, and the first six seasons of The Masked Singer, for which she received two Emmy Awards and a Costume Designers Guild Award; award shows including The Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards, BET Awards, and Country Music Association; and collaborations with superstar performers including Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and Juliette Lewis.

The event is free and open to the public.  RSVP by emailing events@worldchesshof.org.
